Tanzania’s Independence Day is celebrated to commemorate Tanganyika’s independence from British rule in 1961. While the nation of “Tanzania” as we know it was formed later in 1964 through the union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar, the 1961 date remains the recognized Independence Day for the mainland.
